Part 3: Delta Field Trip
Saturday, 09 December 2017
This one day field trip will take students on a boat-based trip to the West Bay Sediment Diversion, in the Mississippi River’s birdsfoot delta. West Bay is an ideal location to observe delta sedimentary dynamics and ecology in action. The diversion was opened in 2003, with the intention of restoring vegetated wetlands to a 13,000 acre coastal marsh that had subsided into open water. Trip participants will visit newly emergent vegetated land in the receiving basin, and discuss the evolution of the diversion conveyance channel, and the morphological response induced by the river. Trip leaders will incorporate information and results from modeling efforts in West Bay, which will be familiar to students from the modeling lessons earlier in the week. The trip will depart from New Orleans, via bus, drive downstream along the Mississippi River, and board boats in Venice, Louisiana.
After your Delta Field Trip registration, Deltares USA will send you an e-mail including payment details.
